Are you a writer with a new theatre piece in need of an audience? Get involved in a night of fresh new writing!

St Margaret’s House are thrilled to be collaborating with Flat 4 Theatre for our upcoming Scratch Night: Freshly Squeezed.

Freshly Squeezed will showcase 6 short scripts from new writers, platforming some of London’s most exciting up and coming talent.

This is a night to champion theatre at an early stage of development and celebrate the importance of new work, brave ideas and strong voices. To further support emerging artists, we will provide a small financial contribution for every performer involved within the Scratch Night.

Next Scratch Night: Thursday 8th May 2025

Submissions Open: Tuesday 4th March

Submissions Close: Tuesday 25th March

What we are looking for?

This is an opportunity for you to test a new script in front of a supportive audience and get constructive feedback. Together, Flat 4 Theatre and St Margaret’s House have worked to make this night a supportive, inclusive and vibrant night of new theatre, where we aim to champion underrepresented stories and artists.

Please read the below and ensure your script meets the requirements before making a submission:

  • 10 minutes in length (A 10 min short play, or a 10 min extract of a longer piece - please only attach the section intended to be performed and not the full script)

  • Monologues/duologues (No more than 2 actors per piece - multi-rolling encouraged of course!)

  • New/emerging theatre writers (Early career and emerging writers who are looking to take risks, try something new and potentially see their writing performed for the very first time)

  • Content (We are particularly interested in scripts with a political and/or community-based focus. We will not tolerate any forms of bigotry or discrimination within any submissions)

The above will help inform our rigorous selection process, in which, the Flat 4 & SMH team will select 6 scripts that best reflect our goal of supporting early career writers to stage their own, risk taking piece of theatre.

The Freshly Squeezed Process:

We want to make sure that Freshly Squeezed is a supportive process for all selected applicants, giving them space to take risks, try something new, and grow as new/emerging writers. With this in mind, we have worked with Flat4 to ensure that Freshly Squeezed is a unique Scratch Night with integrated support throughout:

  • Rehearsals - There will be a full rehearsal of all 6 pieces on Sunday 4th May, in advance of the Scratch Night itself, as well as a full tech & dress on 8th May

  • Feedback - Each piece will receive written feedback from the audience, as well as from the Flat 4 & SMH Teams

  • Network - Each selected piece will become a part of SMH’s emerging artist network, which can provide opportunity for further support and collaboration in the future
